Universidad Nacional del Sur
Founded in 1956, the Universidad Nacional del Sur is a public university located in Bahía Blanca, 700 km South of Buenos Aires, and the oldest university in the Patagonia region. Teaching and research activities are organized into sixteen Departments, that offer 52 high-quality first degree careers and 42 postgraduate programs. Today, the UNS has about 22,000 students and 2,500 faculty members and it is proudly approaching an internationalization stage.
In the last few years, the UNS has begun an internationalization process that implies the development and implementation of a policy of openness to the world. In order to achieve this goal, the UNS is developing several activities to promote the mobility of students, teaching staff, researchers, and administrative staff; the participation in regional and international networks; the development of academic postgraduate programs; the subscription of agreements with foreign institutions; the implementation of joint research projects with groups in other countries; the creation of an "English as an Foreign Language" program for local students and of a "Spanish as a Foreign Language" program for exchange students; the internationalization of the curricula of the different careers and the promotion of double degrees and co-tutelle programs.
Participation Erasmus Mundus
The UNS has been a partner in five successful Erasmus Mundus Consortia sponsored by the European Union: ARBOPEUE (coordinated by the University of Deusto; Spain), EUROTANGO I and EUROTANGO II (coordinated by the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain), ARTESS (coordinated by the University of Padova, Italy) and EUROPLATA (coordinated by the University of Groningen, The Netherlands). At present, we are very proud to be a EURICA partner. We have also taken part in several Alfa projects (Alfa III Tuning Latin America was one of the last ones in which the UNS took part). The UNS is also part of 11 ARFITEC (Argentine-France Technological Exchange) Projects and these allow to exchange an increasing number of engineering students with France (26 students in 2012). Cooperation with Europe is specially active but we also have strong ties with partner universities in the region. The UNS participates in several Exchange Programs such as MARCA (Mercosur), JIMA (México), MACA (Colombia), etc.
The Universidad Nacional del Sur is number 48 in the Iberoamerican Ranking SCIMAGO 2012 (for research institutions) and number 6 taking into account only Argentine universities. In the QS Ranking for Latin America 2013 the UNS is number 66.
Information per Mobility Type
All undergraduate programs are taught in Spanish and open to international exchange students. A B1 Spanish proficiency level is highly recommended. There are 52 undergraduate programs available in almost all disciplines. All information for international students can be found on our website.
Postgraduate programs at the UNS include 19 doctor's degrees, 23 master's degrees and 5 specializations, with an approximate duration of 4 years for doctor's degrees, 2 years and 6 months for master's degrees, and 2 years for specializations. Most postgraduate programs are strongly related to science and technology. Out of the total of postgraduate programs accredited by the National Commission for University Assessment and Accreditation (CONEAU), 11 were categorized as Excellent (A), 12 as Very good (B), and 8 as Good (C).
Scientific research at the Universidad Nacional del Sur is strongly linked to regional issues and leading actors are usually recognized by academic, political and social institutions throughout the country. In addition, several professors and researchers are members of internationally relevant associations and work as visiting professors and lecturers at other universities, both in Argentina and abroad.
Many UNS professors carry out their research work at the institutes established by agreement with the National Board for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), the largest national body for promotion and scientific research in the country. At present, there are 9 dual structure (UNS-CONICET) research centers: the Center for Renewable Resources in the Semi-Arid Region (CERZOS); the Argentine Oceanographic Institute (IADO); the Bahía Blanca Biochemical Research Institute (INIBIBB); the Chemical Engineering Pilot Plant (PLAPIQUI); the Bahía Blanca Mathematics Institute (INMABB); the Electrical Engineering Research Institute (IIIE); the Southern Geological Institute (INGEOSUR); the Southern Chemical Institute (INQUISUR); and the Institute of Economics (IE). The first four are located at a complex called Scientific and Technological Center (CCT).
There are also several research institutes at the academic Departments, such as the Research Institute in Organic Chemistry (INIQO), the Institute of Applied Mechanics (IMA), the Institute of Electrochemical Engineering and Corrosion (INIEC), the Institute of Computer Sciences and Engineering and the Institute of Physics, among others.
Post-doctoral research and Staff
The UNS is eager to expand its international research network, and equally welcomes applications from talented post-doctoral researchers as well as staff, for all academic departments and research institutes.
In relation with Erasmus Mundus it is therefore essential that any prospective post-doctoral researcher/staff visitor has been invited by a supervisor/host at the University. A letter of pre-acceptance should be enclosed with your application.
In order to find a supervisor/hosting department/research center you may contact the International Office at . Please always enclose your CV and a brief description of your research topic in your communications.
