The University of Antioquia, founded in 1803, is Colombia’s oldest public higher education institution and remains the second largest one in the country, with over 39.000 students. Its main campus is located in the scientific and technological district of Medellín, capital city of the Department of Antioquia. It currently has 11 campuses covering all zones of Antioquia.

The University of Antioquia was accredited as a high quality institution in 2003 by the National Council for Accreditations of the Ministry of Education of Colombia. UdeA was the first public university in the country to get such recognition. In 2012 UdeA got the renewal of this accreditation for a 10-year period, the maximum period of accreditation ever granted to a Colombian public higher education institution.
A University full of cultural and natural diversity
The presence of the UdeA in all subregions of the department gives access to a large territorial diversity, ranging from marine and coastal environments (including the Caribbean Sea) to mountains and moorlands, where UdeA carries out research and social and integration activities, based on its installed capacities.
Thanks to its direct contact with the social and territorial reality, the UdeA has achieved a remarkable production of knowledge, allowing research advances on tropical diseases, natural resources, biodiversity, socio-political processes, territory social construction, integration of social minorities, as well as cultural and artistic expressions. These skills are highly valued internationally and have a huge potential to be explored.
The University Research System
UdeA is considered one of the leading research universities in the country and its policies are consistent with the Colombian National System of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Some of the goals that the University has in the field of research are: to increase the number of PHDs and doctoral programs, consolidate the excellence research centers, increase the internationally referenced scientific production, attract greater external funding resources, strengthen its technological infrastructure, generate more R&D contracts with companies and improve the scientific impact, bringing solutions to national needs and thus, making its contribution to human development.
Thanks to the quality of their scientific and technical production, UdeA’s research groups are nationally renown and are active in several international scientific research networks.
The University in the world
The International Affairs Direction works on three main lines:
1. International cooperation in research:
This line seeks to create links with the international scientific community, to strengthen international networks and make the research work of the institution visible. This line also fosters the development and co-funding of research projects with external partnerships and the participation of foreign researchers in internal University projects.
2. Academic cooperation:
This line is designed to foment the existing agreements with more than 500 international partners, promote incoming and outgoing mobility of professors, researchers and students, as well as encourage double degree agreements, set the University curriculum to international trends and standards, and publicize the institution around the world.
3. International cooperation for development:
The last one is intended to participate in social welfare programs and projects with the support of international organizations in order to establish North-South and South-South knowledge exchange. In addition, this line contributes to the implementation of public policies in international development cooperation, carries on research and provides training on these issues.

Master degree studies
The University of Antioquia offers 64 Master Degree programs in its 25 academic units with a two year study period. The university also offers 46 medical specializations.
The University of Antioquia offers 23 PhD programs under 120 academic emphasis lines.
With regards of the research development goals, the University is looking forward to increasing its number of doctors as well as its number of PhD programs, consolidating its excellence research centers, attracting greater external financial resource, strengthening its technological infrastructure, generating more I+D contracts with companies, as well as improving its scientific impact towards the solution of national needs and the contribution to human development.
Due to their technical and scientific production, the University of Antioquia’s Research Groups are renowned throughout the whole nation and are part of several international research networks.
As far as the Research System is concerned, The University understands that its technological management is a strategic support which contributes to generating a greater relevance to scientific, technological and professional training activities.
On this basis, the University has leaded a successful Government-University-Industry Program for more than a decade, which has gathered researchers, governmental leaders and CEOs from national major companies to work on a technological management common agenda in order to improve and innovate on productive processes and services.
The University Research Center (SIU for its acronym in Spanish) is one of Latin-America’s top research centers. Its infrastructure includes high quality technological equipment, specialized laboratories and a meeting environment, which allow interdisciplinary work and research projects with the integration of a wide variety of knowledge fields.
Post-doctoral research and Staff
The faculty is looking forward to expanding its international research network as well as welcoming applications from staff and talented post-doctoral researchers.
