General information


Palacký University was founded in 1573 as the second university in the Czech Lands. Today it has more than 23.000 students at 8 faculties, covering fields from health sciences and medicine through modern and classical languages, philosophy, teacher training, sciences, law, and theology. 

Palacký University is a modern institution providing high quality teaching combined with research and supported by state of the art facilities – libraries, computer facilities, laboratories, etc. Housing is guaranteed for all international students in modern, fully equipped dormitories and dining halls are located in six different parts of Olomouc. The University excels in many research areas - among the strongest we can mention biomedical sciences, nanotechnologies, quantum optics, education science and others.


Once the medieval capital of Moravia, Olomouc combines history and contemporary vitality. The town is big enough to provide all the convenience of city life including theatres, galleries and clubs, as well as sports facilities. Yet it is small enough to allow you to actually meet people. With less than three hours drive to Prague, Vienna, Krakow or Bratislava, Olomouc lies in the very heart of Europe.

The main language of instruction is Czech, despite this fact, Palacký University offers a wide range of courses in English. The richest diversity of study programmes is available in the field of humanities where Dutch, Chinese and German courses are available as well. In Olomouc one can also study Medical Sciences, Law, Education, Business and Natural Sciences and more. Most of the PhD-programmes are provided in English.


The University participates in many European programmes of cooperation in education and research. It has more than 300 Erasmus partners in 28 European countries and 80 bilateral agreements with universities around the world. The student population includes more than 1500 international students from all over the world.

Undergraduate exchange

Many individual subjects provided by faculties of Palacký University are open to international exchange students. In order to know more, it is necessary to check the course catalogue, the website of the particular faculty or contact it´s international coordinator. Students should prove sufficient English language proficiency (B1 CEFR minimum). No language test is required.

Master degree studies

Euroculture, Political Science/European Studies and International Relations, International Development studies and Special Needs Counselling are completely taught in English, German Philology in German and Special Pedagogy in Russian. Master degree programmes take two years. Medicine and Dentistry take 6 years. Mostly it is possible to continue with a PhD degree. If you apply to be admitted as a degree student, in any case you will need:

  • ·Proficiency in English – for specific information contact the coordinator
  • ·An undergraduate degree (licenciatura) in an academic field that is related to the Master’s      programme you apply to.

PhD-studies mainly focus on carrying out a research project. A Master degree is required for students to be admitted to a PhD programme. Applications from prospective PhD students are accepted in many fields of study at the Faculty of Medicine, Humanities, Science, Pedagogy and Law. The language of research depends on an agreement with a supervisor as well as acceptation to study. A doctoral study should be finished in three years. A letter of pre-acceptance should be enclosed with your application.

Post-doctoral research and Staff
Palacký University welcomes post-doctoral researchers as well as staff in various fields and departments. Scientists can use the advantage of well-equipped institutes as the Regional Centre of Advanced Technologies and Materials, the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine and Centre of the Region Haná for Biotechnological and Agricultural Research.

Language requirements

Students should prove sufficient English language proficiency (B2 CEFR minimum). An English proficiency test will be sent to students after submitting their application forms.
